Artist Jeon Byung-sam’s solo exhibition 'The Aesthetics of Disappearance' runs at Gallery Grimson in Insadong, Seoul until the 8th. Jeon builds large abstract works by folding, treating and stacking thousands of his own printed photographs—often of butterflies—so that the original subject becomes hidden at first glance but can be discovered in the work’s exposed cross-sections. He describes folding photos as a way to mark memory (folding as a memory practice) and calls the stacked paper his “paint.” Trained in sculpture and media art and holding a second master’s in computer engineering, Jeon combines craft, technology and installation across series like WAVE, COSMOS and BLOSSOM. The show also debuts new fabric-based folded pieces inspired by his mother’s portraits and garment materials. Jeon invites viewers to look closely and uncover hidden images, turning disappearance into a means to reconsider familiar subjects and their memory.
