Review: Chuncheon Municipal Gugak Orchestra’s 8th concert “Inyeon (因緣)” presented a boundary-crossing, modern take on traditional Korean music. Co-produced with the Gangwon Provincial Gugak Orchestra, the program opened with “Mirakheul” and featured a lion dance and a rendition of “Chuncheon Byeolgok” built on a samulnori (traditional percussion ensemble) base that drew strong audience response. Artistic director Lee Yoo-ra led the orchestra through staples like “Han O Baek Nyeon,” and varied folk songs such as “Noreutgarak,” “Cheongchunga,” “Taepyeongga,” and “Singosantaryeong,” highlighting the distinctive “kkeokgi” (a vocal bending technique) style. The provincial orchestra joined forces with b-boy crew MASSACRE (마싸크루) for “Banghwang,” blending breaking and locking with modern gugak arrangements and band textures. Collaborative pieces mixed gugak ensemble, b-boying, and vocals—culminating in an energetic “Arirang” medley featuring b-boying and rap that showcased the performers’ dynamism.
