Han Kang's 'December Story' Play Returns After 20 Years

The play 'December Story,' which inspired novelist Han Kang to write and record a song of the same name, returns to the stage in Seoul after a 20-year hiatus. Presented by the Jeviggot (제비꽃) theatre company, performances run on Dec. 1–8 and Dec. 23–31 at Banjul Stage in Jongno-gu. The drama follows eight strangers who meet one winter night in a café called 'December Story,' each revealing wounds, secrets, old loves, fears and hopes. Notable stage and screen actors are in the cast. Han Kang watched the original 2005 production, then wrote, composed and performed the song; she later included it among ten self-made tracks on a 2007 essay collection. Director Choi Chang-geun says Han Kang’s lyrics capture the characters’ lack, pain and the quiet of winter, and that the song has come to complete the once-incomplete script.
