Jeju Province has developed five ready-to-serve school meal dishes based on traditional local foods and will hold tastings at school and community meal sites through December. The new menu items are Dolmun-eo Sweet Potato Nutritional Rice (돌문어고구마영양밥), Steamed Pork Belly with Radish (삼겹살무찜), Gosari Japchae (고사리잡채 - bracken fern stir-fry), Stir-fried Radish “Meat” (무고기볶음), and Pickled Onions with Garlic Scapes (양파마늘종장아찌). The Dolmun-eo Sweet Potato Rice modernizes the old Jeju emergency staple gamjeo-bap (고구마차조밥) by adding small octopus (돌문어) and radish for a nutritious dish. The project is a collaboration between the provincial government, the Jeju Economic and Trade Promotion Agency, CJ Freshway, and local culinary master Bu Jeongsuk, started in March to preserve and popularize Jeju’s culinary heritage. Officials plan tasting events in senior centers (경로당) as well, where cooking staff shortages make ready-to-serve options useful.
