Korea's Nuri Rocket 4th Launch Succeeds, Private-led Space Era Begins

South Korea's homegrown launch vehicle Nuri achieved a successful fourth launch, marking the first time a rocket made and assembled by private industry (Hanwha Aerospace) completed its mission. The launch carried 13 satellites including a next-generation medium satellite and used a nighttime launch for the first time to reach a sun-synchronous orbit. The government plans two more test launches (5th in early 2026 and 6th in 2027) to transfer more launch manufacturing and operations responsibilities to the private sector, expanding private roles from production into launch preparation and parts of launch operations. Officials warn that any gap after the 6th launch could harm the emerging private ecosystem, so authorities are pushing to secure funding for a 7th “Nuri heritage” flight (to avoid a 2027–2031 launch lull) and to establish at least one launch per year thereafter. Industry experts stress that repeated launches are essential to maintain workforce skills, supply chains, and operational data. (Naro Space Center: Korea’s main launch site)
