South Korea’s luxury hotels are selling limited-edition Christmas cakes with eye-watering prices and theatrical designs. The Seoul Shilla Hotel’s ‘The Finest Luxury’ tops the list at around 500,000 won, featuring seasonal white truffle and intricate hand decoration, limited to three per day. Other hotels follow: Grand InterContinental’s 350,000-won ‘Merry-Go-Round Melodie’ (a rotating, music-playing cake, limited to 50), several 300,000-won offerings like Four Seasons’ ‘Diamond Four Seasons Leaf’, and JW Marriott’s 285,000-won ‘Snow Light’. Mid-range 200,000-won cakes include Andaz Seoul Gangnam’s elaborate multi-layered festive tree cake. More affordable hotel bakery options start in the 100,000-won range, and everyday luxury choices are available from about 39,000–79,000 won (examples include traditional ‘stollen’ and black forest). Many of these are limited editions and sell out quickly during December. (white truffle: a rare seasonal mushroom prized in haute cuisine)
