Global Flight Chaos as Airbus Issues Massive A320 Recall

Airbus has ordered a large-scale recall of A320-family aircraft after software faults raised a risk of sudden altitude loss. About 11,300 A320s are in service worldwide and roughly 6,000 require fixes; most can be resolved with a software update but about 900 aircraft need hardware replacement (hardware replacement: physical parts change rather than a software patch). The recall has led to widespread cancellations and delays—Air France-KLM, ANA, Jetstar, and others announced numerous cancellations, and some carriers like Avianca expect prolonged disruptions and paused ticket sales. The FAA’s probe following a recent JetBlue incident in Cancun triggered an urgent European safety directive requiring affected planes to be fixed before flying. Impact varies by airline: American Airlines has many affected A320s but expects quick 2-hour software fixes per plane, while some carriers with older fleets may face longer grounding. In South Korea the effect is limited: about 80 domestic A320s with roughly 40 needing updates, most of which will be completed by Nov. 30. The recall is the largest in Airbus’s 55-year history and could disrupt holiday travel for millions.
