A new Korean musical, 'Joseon Boxer', developed through the 2023 Content Creative Talent Incubation Program (창의인재동반사업), debuted after mentoring, workshops and showcase wins. Set in colonial-era Joseon, the story follows two young men devoted to boxing. Writer Um Hye-su and composer Seo Jin-young met as mentees in the six-month program, completed their work during intensive weekly mentor reviews, and won top audience votes at an early reading showcase. Director Jang Woo-seong, a 2015–2016 program alumnus, joined after the first showcase. The creators say the program’s funding, structured mentoring, and practical experience (casting, rehearsals, showcase production) were crucial to development and eventual staging in Daehangno. They recommend the program for emerging creators lacking practical experience, suggest expanded follow-up support for alumni, and request more guidance on industry realities like contracts and company negotiations. The team hopes the project’s success will encourage more industry participation in the program and help build a stronger musical-creation ecosystem.
