Bogildo (an island associated with the Joseon-era scholar Yun Seondo, 1587–1671) reveals the disciplined, poetic life he built in exile. The writer takes a boat from Haenam to the connected islands and explores three main sites Yun developed as an idealized garden-world: Nakseojae (his everyday residence), Seyeonjeong (a pond-front pavilion and performance stage), and Dongcheon Seoksil (two small stone rooms high on a cliff used for rest and reading). The landscape combines natural valleys, artificial ponds, bridges and terraces to form a carefully composed retreat reflecting Yun’s inner order and response to national trauma (such as the Manchu invasions). Visiting the cliffside Seoksil is especially striking — the vertical setting gives perspective and quiet for reflection. The piece reflects on how such immersive environments shaped local people and preserve cultural pride, while tracing the author’s own emotional response as the island recedes on the return ferry.
