Arete Quartet, a young Korean string quartet formed in 2019 (average age 27), has released its first full-length international album, “Janacek & Suk,” through Platoon. The group—violinists Jeon Chae-an and Park Eun-jung, violist Jang Yoon-seon, and cellist Park Sung-hyun—rose to prominence after winning several international chamber competitions (including Prague Spring and others) and being named resident artists at Kumho Art Hall. The new album features Czech repertoire central to the quartet’s artistic journey: Leoš Janáček’s String Quartets No.1 “Kreutzer Sonata” and No.2 “Intimate Letters,” and Josef Suk’s “Meditation on the Old Czech Hymn St. Wenceslas.” The members say the recording marks a new chapter that expresses their musical identity and completes a long-standing artistic connection with Czech music. Arete (from Greek, meaning “excellent talent”) formed among students at the Korea National University of Arts and is currently touring Korea to celebrate the release.
