Immersive Courtroom Comedy ‘Trap’ Surrounds Audience Like Jury

The Seoul play Trap, starring Park Geon-hyung and directed by Ha Su-min, stages its actors amid the audience on three sides so viewers feel like jurors. The central set is a large dining table where a traveling salesman, Traps, becomes entangled in a retired judges’ mock trial after a car accident. The production is performed as a dark comedy with a shocking final twist, and its staging forces actors to perform to audience members’ faces — even their backs — making every entrance, meal onstage, and gesture high-stakes. Director Ha likens the setup to madangnori (traditional Korean courtyard theatre), treating the table as both a feast and a bench of judgment and inviting spectators to question what they would have done. Performances run through the 30th at Sejong Center’s S Theatre; the team says each performance’s atmosphere changes with the audience and that the show is completed by those watching.
