The Chuncheon Classic Coffee Cantata & Forum runs through next month’s 21st around Kim You-jeong Literature Village and other Chuncheon venues. Organized by cultural group ‘Munhwa Gerilla Hyang’, the festival—titled “90 Years Since the Meeting of Kim You-jeong and Yi Sang: A Love Song for Two Geniuses”—blends performances, forums and interactive coffee experiences. Ensemble NYCC (including Quartet NYCC) collaborates with the festival; after presenting Kim You-jeong’s works at Carnegie Hall in 2013, they return with new programs. The main “Coffee Cantata” runs at Kim You-jeong’s birthplace through the 27th, following a forum on Chuncheon’s arts and coffee futures and popular music and classical concerts. On the 27th, a jazz-themed program features trumpeter Kim Ye-jung and a new tribute piece “Kim I-Yu Sang-jeong,” joined by pianist Shin Sang-woo and bassist Jeon Jae-geun. Another evening mixes literature and opera—“Kim You-jeong, Yi Sang, Geum-hong, Jeom-sun and a Night of Opera Arias”—with narration by literary scholar Yoo In-soon, piano by Kim Ji-eun, soprano Min Eun-hong, tenor Min Hyun-gi, and coffee master Song Esther providing a multi-sensory experience. (Kim You-jeong: a noted Korean writer; Yi Sang: an influential Korean avant-garde writer; Kim You-jeong Literature Village: a heritage site honoring the author.)
