Masaharu Kuwamura, 60, who lost a leg to cancer at age 8, is drawing attention for attempting to complete Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains. He began mountain climbing at 44 and, without using a prosthetic, climbs using fixed walking sticks in both hands. Kuwamura described the effort as repeatedly doing a one-legged squat with push-up-like strain, calling some sections extremely demanding and risky. In September he completed a four-day traverse of Mount Koryu (2,814 m) and Mount Kashimayari (2,889 m), his 64th and 65th peaks; the route includes narrow ridgelines, steep rock faces and laddered sections. After two prior failed attempts, he succeeded this time, and NHK made a documentary about his unique journey. (Source: Monthly Mountain magazine, November issue)
