At actor Lee Jang-woo’s private wedding on Nov. 23 in Songpa-gu, Seoul, the bride carried a novelty “walnut bouquet” (호두 부케) made to resemble walnut pastries (호두과자) rather than a traditional flower bouquet. The bouquet was a surprise gift from Buchang Confectionery (부창제과), the walnut pastry brand Lee models for. The company said walnuts have long been used as auspicious food in Korea, symbolizing prosperity and offspring in celebratory feasts, and noted their use in traditional banquets marking long life. Buchang Confectionery — a revived 1963 Gyeongju bakery relaunched in 2024 as a premium walnut pastry brand — sells various flavored walnut pastries and recently had its product chosen as a dessert at an APEC meeting table. The article notes, however, that walnuts are not a classic wedding emblem in Korea; traditional wedding symbols more commonly include jujubes (대추) and chestnuts (밤), which represent wishes for early offspring and lineage continuation respectively.
