Kimchi Exports Set to Break Records Again; Japan Market Shrinks

Kimchi exports reached $137.39 million through October, up 2.0% year-on-year and on track to surpass last year’s record. Growth is driven by strong demand in the US and Europe—helped by K-content popularity, local production by major brands (e.g., CJ Bibigo, Daesang’s Jongga), placement in big retailers, and localized milder products. Europe’s interest is bolstered by familiarity with fermented foods (e.g., sauerkraut) and rising demand for plant-based options in restaurants. Japan, historically the largest market, has declined sharply due to strong local kimchi (kimuchi) brands tailored to Japanese tastes, price pressure from currency shifts, and fusion varieties. Experts warn export growth may slow because of market concentration (Japan, US, parts of Europe and Southeast Asia). Sustainable expansion will require market diversification (Middle East, Latin America), product-format adaptation (shelf-stable, retort, small packs), local production or partnerships, and regulatory 대응 (e.g., adding “kimchi cabbage” to Codex standards). The government plans to support the industry to make K-kimchi a global food brand.
