DDP's 11th Anniversary: Transforming into a Top Cultural Hub in Seoul

The Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) in Seoul is undergoing a transformation to become a top tourist attraction, aiming to draw over 20 million visitors annually. The Seoul Design Foundation has unveiled a 'New Perspective' plan which will shift DDP into a multi-functional cultural space by 2027, integrating education, community, and archiving. The surrounding Dongdaemun History and Culture Park will be developed into a trendy spot for young people and a place to experience Seoul's design culture. The plan includes creating a water area in the park to provide relaxing spaces during summer, enhancing public amenities with cafes and unique spots that attract young tourists, and transforming the current design labs into an innovative space called the 'Design Larchiveum' combining exhibitions, education, and community activities. The initiative also involves supporting new designers and stimulating the local economy by utilizing empty retail spaces as design startup centers, aiming to make Dongdaemun a hub for design innovation and entrepreneurship in Asia. This transformation aims to elevate the status of Korean design, while providing platforms for creative ideas to flourish.
