The Seoul Museum of History will present “Wishes in Korean Folk Painting” at the Korean Cultural Center in Washington, D.C. from this month through Feb. 20. Supported by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Foundation’s Touring K-Arts program, the show traces Seoul minhwa (민화; Korean folk paintings) from traditional home-decorative pieces to contemporary reinterpretations. Part 1, “Minnhwa of Seoul — Wishes in the Home,” highlights genre works like pyeongryangdo, hojakdo, chaekkado, and uhwaedo (traditional subject paintings) that became everyday décor. Part 2, “Muhwa — Tradition Meets Modern K-Culture,” features modern takes on minhwa, including pieces with tigers and magpies—icons gaining attention through pop culture—and a tiger painting called juk-hodo. Part 3, “Time of Yunsul,” uses media works, with help from the Cultural Heritage Administration, to explore the continuity of Seoul’s cultural heritage. The museum director said the exhibition aims to share the beauty of minhwa and Seoul’s cultural depth with global audiences.
