South Korea’s gim (dried seaweed) exports surpassed $1 billion for the first time in history, reaching $1.015 billion as of November 20, 2025. The rise reflects improved product quality and growing global demand, especially in North America and Europe where consumption has surged. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries supported the industry by expanding farming licenses (adding 2,700 ha to reach 66,204 ha total), modernizing processing facilities, improving logistics and certification, and promoting export markets. Companies also developed gim snacks and seasoned sheets tailored to foreign tastes and used Hallyu (Korean Wave) marketing to boost demand. The minister emphasized continued policy support and private-sector innovation to strengthen international competitiveness of gim and other seafood products.
