As the year-end season approaches, major Korean retailers are competing to create stay-and-shop “festival” experiences in Seoul’s busiest districts — Jamsil, Myeongdong and Yeouido. Lotte opened a large outdoor “Lotte Town Christmas Market” at Lotte World Tower’s World Park in Jamsil with a giant tree, carousel, light installations, 26 winter food stalls, 16 gift shops and a private champagne lounge; inside Lotte World Mall a large Super Mario pop-up called “JOYFUL HOLIDAY in LOTTE WORLD MALL” features characters throughout the mall. In Myeongdong, Shinsegae expanded its outdoor media-screened plaza (Shinsegae Square) as a photo-focused winter landmark aimed at tourists. In Yeouido, The Hyundai Seoul built an indoor Christmas-village concept with an 8-meter tree and about 100 trees, snow-covered cabin roofs and abundant photo zones. Retailers say larger, immersive markets and experiential content are designed to extend customer dwell time, boost brand experience and attract both domestic shoppers and growing numbers of foreign tourists.
