The Ritz Paris, opened in 1898 on Place Vendôme by hotelier César Ritz, redefined luxury by designing private, elegant spaces rather than mere lodging. Innovations included private bathrooms in every room, thick carpets to muffle footsteps, and indirect lighting to create a refined, intimate atmosphere. The hotel became a cultural hub for the “Lost Generation” — Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jean-Paul Sartre — and inspired writers like Marcel Proust. Coco Chanel lived in a suite at the Ritz for about 30 years, treating it as her home and the headquarters of her fashion empire. During the 1944 Liberation of Paris, Hemingway famously celebrated by liberating the hotel bar and popping dozens of champagne bottles; the room is still known today as the “Hemingway Bar.” After a major renovation completed in 2016, the Ritz Paris remains an enduring symbol of “Parisian chic” and the history of luxury hospitality.
