Avoid Aluminum Foil in Microwaves — Fire Risk When Reheating Sweet Potatoes

As people enjoy roasted sweet potatoes (gun-goguma) at home in winter, authorities warn against putting aluminum foil in microwaves because it can produce sparks and cause fires. Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry cautioned that metal reflects microwave radiation, creating sparks that may spread to food or the oven interior. Ovens and grills are safe with metal because they use heating elements rather than microwaves. Experts advise following appliance manuals and recommend safer cooking methods for sweet potatoes: air-fryer (180°C, 20–30 min), frying pan (low heat, 10–15 min each side plus resting), stovetop pot (medium heat, 20–30 min), or oven (190–200°C, 30–40 min). Wash and dry sweet potatoes well for shorter cooking and crispier skin; peel if not cleaned thoroughly. Food safety authorities note that aluminum leaching in normal cooking is very low, though acidic or salty foods can corrode foil and should be kept from direct contact.
