Inje’s Wondae-ri Birch Forest, nicknamed the “Whispering Birch Forest,” is a restored ecological tourist site famed for its white-barked birches (자작나무) and scenic trails year-round. Once a pine forest damaged by pests, 690,000 birch trees were planted between 1974 and 1995, creating dense groves that now offer diverse seasonal beauty—fresh green in spring, cool shade for summer picnics, vivid autumn foliage, and snow‑white “winter‑kingdom” views. The site opened to the public in 2012 and features seven trails, a forest classroom, ecological pond, viewpoints, a wooden bridge, and child‑friendly facilities like an “Indian house” (인디언집). Trekking routes include an 80‑minute upper road (원정임도) and a closer 2.7 km lower trail (원대임도), with full return hikes taking up to four hours; proper footwear and winter gear are advised. The forest is popular across ages—many visitors are in their 50s, while winter draws more 20–30‑year‑olds, boosted by social media—and it has won numerous honors, including selection among Korea’s top forests and repeated placement in “Korea Tourism 100.” Inje has expanded parking, begun paid entry with local voucher refunds, and is developing a wood‑culture center due in 2026. Nearby lodging, rafting on the Naerincheon River, and a waterfront trekking route add to its appeal. Contact Inje National Forest Management Office at 033-463-0044 for visitor hours and details.
