The new one-actor musical Behind the Moon premiered at Chungmu Art Center as part of its 20th anniversary program. The show dramatizes the life of Michael Collins, the often-overlooked Apollo 11 astronaut who remained alone in the command module while Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the moon. Four leading actors—Yoo Joon-sang, Jung Moon-sung, Ko Hoon-jung, and Ko Sang-ho—each take turns performing the solo role in separate runs, describing the piece as a challenge and a chance for deep solo performance. The musical, developed over about five years, won the 2023 “Creative Musical Award Next” and uses LED visuals and a three-dimensional set to evoke the moon’s far side. Composer Kang So-yeon and director Kim Ji-ho emphasize emotional storytelling supported by a live four-piece band. Cast members say the play offers solace and universality—loneliness, aspiration, and human connection—and hope it will reach audiences worldwide. The show runs at Chungmu Art Center’s Black Theater through Feb. 8 next year. (Chungmu Art Center: a major performing arts venue in Seoul)
