The 58th joint meeting of the Korea-Japan Cooperation Committee, a private bilateral body founded in 1969, will be held for the first time in Jeju at the Dream Tower complex on Nov. 21–22. About 70 participants include Jeju Governor Oh Young-hoon, former Korean foreign minister Park Jin, committee leaders Kim Ki-byung and Lee Dae-sun, and Japan’s co-chair Taro Aso (Liberal Democratic Party vice president) and Ambassador Mizushima Koichi. The agenda focuses on “redefining Korea-Japan ties for a new era,” with sessions on political cooperation to ease global tensions (lectures by Park Jin and Japan’s Okano Masataka) and economic/scientific competition and cooperation (lectures by former Korean ICT minister Jin Dae-je and Waseda University professor Fukagawa Yukiko). Organizers hope hosting the meeting in Jeju, Korea’s global tourism island, will boost mutual understanding and trust ahead of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic normalization.
