Following Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi’s comments implying possible intervention over Taiwan, many Chinese travelers canceled trips to Japan. Travel platform Qunar reported South Korea became the top overseas destination from China last weekend, leading in flight bookings and searches, overtaking traditionally popular Japan. Airline cancellations to Japan spiked, with some carriers offering full refunds after Beijing advised avoiding travel to Japan. The fallout has affected tourism, student exchanges, film releases and cultural events, and prompted safety notices from Japan’s embassy in China. Economic ties are significant: January–September Chinese visitors made up about 25% of Japan’s foreign tourists, spending roughly 15.4 trillion won.
