Chinese State Media Warns Japan’s Economic Recovery Could Become Harder Amid Travel Ban

Chinese state-affiliated Global Times warned that Beijing’s recent measures—urging citizens to avoid travel to Japan and delaying release of Japanese films—could worsen an already fragile Japanese economy. The editorial criticized recent hawkish remarks by Japan’s Prime Minister about Taiwan, saying such rhetoric increases geopolitical risk and could tighten Japan’s economic room for maneuver amid weak domestic demand, inflation above target, high public debt, falling exports and weak auto shipments. China’s travel advisory comes after diplomatic protests and has led to cancelations of cultural exchanges and postponed movie releases; given Chinese tourists were a top driver of Japan’s tourism recovery (inbound tourists) — with about 7.48 million Chinese visitors and large spending — the advisory risks a substantial hit to Japan’s tourism revenue. The piece also suggested Beijing may consider further measures if Tokyo continues provocative policies. (한일령: restrictions on travel and cultural exchanges with Japan)
