Chinese automaker BYD entered the Korean market in January and quickly sold over 4,000 passenger EVs within 10 months, outpacing early sales paces of Tesla and Polestar in Korea. BYD launched three models — the compact SUV Atto 3, sedan Seal, and mid-size SUV Sea Lion 7 — and is on track to reach the imported-car top 10 by year-end. At its Shenzhen headquarters PR center, BYD demonstrated the safety of its Blade Battery (a long, thin LFP lithium iron phosphate battery) with a nail-penetration test that showed far less fire risk than conventional NCM (nickel-cobalt-manganese) cells. BYD plans to press its price competitiveness and battery safety claims to expand further in Korea, while continuing heavy investment in technology including autonomous driving.
