Harmonicist Lee Yun-seok took part in the World Harmonica Championship held in Trossingen, Germany from Oct. 29 to Nov. 2. The first full in-person event since 2021 drew hundreds of participants and audiences from about 30 countries. Lee served as the first Korean judge in the main adult chromatic harmonica solo category, evaluating both newly commissioned required pieces and contestants’ free-choice works. He joined a jury of international masters including Sigmund Groven (Norway) and Yasuo Watani (Japan). At the gala concert, Lee performed on the “Asian Harmonica Variations” stage, presenting harmonica originals and classical pieces by Mozart and Handel. He also performed a celebrated duet with Sigmund Groven at the “Tommy Reilly Memorial Concert” commemorating the 25th anniversary of the legendary classical harmonica player’s passing. Lee said he was honored to uphold tradition and hopes to continue making music worldwide with the small but powerful harmonica (harmonica: a small free-reed wind instrument).
