The 21st Beolgyo Cockle Festival takes place May 21–23 along the Beolgyo stream in Boseong County, South Jeolla Province. Under the theme “Gift of the clean mudflats! Beolgyo cockles are the answer!,” the festival features performances, hands-on activities and food booths. Highlights include a farmers’ parade (nongak gilnori) and making 1,000 cockle rice balls (kkomaek jumeokbap) on opening day, youth arts events and a lineup of about 20 celebratory performers. Day two offers a “Cockle Story Orchestra,” an Arirang-themed cockle concert (Arirang is a traditional Korean folk song) and fireworks. The final day includes a stage reenactment of the novel Taebaeksanmaek, youth dance competitions and more. Organizers aim to grow the event into a nationally recognized festival.
