Korea Begins Work to Set Global Standards for Gim (dried seaweed)

South Korea has won approval at the Codex Alimentarius Commission to start drafting a global standard for gim (dried seaweed), often called Korea’s “black semiconductor.” The move covers three product types—dried gim, roasted gim, and seasoned gim—and aims to harmonize quality, hygiene, labeling, and testing methods used in international trade. Converting the existing Asia regional standard into a Codex global standard should reduce trade disputes and lower exporters’ burden from varying import requirements, supporting expanded gim exports. The work may revise specific criteria during drafting, and Korea, which first proposed standardization in 2010 and achieved a regional standard in 2017, plans to collaborate with research institutes to pursue further seafood standards if successful.
