Kim Whanki’s 1954 painting “Dapgyo” (답교) will be offered at K-auction’s November sale in Seoul on the 26th, with an estimated starting price of 1.5 billion won. The auction features 108 works worth about 8.6 billion won, showcasing 70 years of Korean modern abstract art. Highlights include first-generation pioneer Kim Whanki and Dansaekhwa (단색화, monochrome painting) masters Park Seo-bo, Jeong Sang-hwa, and Ha Chong-hyun, as well as notable artists like Kim Chang-yeol, Lee Ufan, Jang Uk-jin, Lee Dae-won, and Oh Ji-ho. “Dapgyo,” a 1950s landmark that interprets the traditional Jeongwol Daeboreum (정월대보름) bridge-stepping folk custom (다리밟기) in Kim’s distinctive visual language, has appeared in major retrospectives and exhibitions over decades. The sale also includes acclaimed international artists such as David Hockney, Yayoi Kusama, Eva Hesse, Kazuo Shiraga, Anthony Caro, and Donna Huanca. All works are on free public view at K-auction’s gallery from the 18th through the auction day.
