Don’t Go Barefoot in Gym Showers — Bacteria Thrive on Wet Floors

A microbiologist’s experiment showed thick bacterial growth on swabs from shared gym shower floors, highlighting infection risks from walking barefoot. Warm, humid areas like saunas, showers, pools, and spas promote growth of microbes such as staphylococci, including antibiotic‑resistant MRSA, which can cause severe infections if it penetrates the body. Shared towels and gym equipment also transfer bacteria; pathogens like Salmonella and fungi that cause athlete’s foot (무좀) and warts (사마귀) have been reported. Experts recommend wearing shower slippers (슬리퍼) and avoiding shared towels to reduce risk.
