Geoje City in South Gyeongsang Province announced the 'Jisimdo Sanmaru Cultural Playground' project to develop Jisimdo Island into a tourist destination. With about 18.3 billion won (approx.) allocated through 2028, plans include a 'Sanmaru themed garden' at the island’s summit and a 'Dongbaek Forest Play area' (dongbaek = camellia, referring to the island’s camellia trees) with picnic spots and play facilities on the former Jisim School site. The 13,935 m² project aims to preserve the island’s historic, cultural, and ecological assets—including rare plants like Geoje pyeongran (a native orchid) and wartime remnants such as a Japanese-era airstrip and houses—while creating integrated tourism spaces. Detailed designs are underway and construction is expected to begin in 2027.
