GS25, a South Korean convenience store chain, says its new ‘Merong Bar’ became the store’s best-selling ice cream within two months of its early September launch, selling over 5 million units. The product helped boost overall ice cream sales by 60% (and bar-type ice cream sales by over 140%) between Sept. 11 and Nov. 11. A follow-up flavor, the Strawberry Merong Bar, reached #2 in ice cream sales within a week of its late-October debut. The Merong Bar is a bar-style ice cream that melts into a jelly-like shape resembling a playful “merong” gesture (a teasing facial/tongue gesture common in Korea), a concept that has gone viral on social media—especially among Generation Z. Priced at 1,500 won, GS25 says seven of its top 10 ice cream SKUs are its own differentiated products, and the company plans to keep launching items tailored to Gen Z tastes.
