Micro-Satellite Constellations to Help Prevent Large Wildfires

South Korea is exploring tiny satellite constellations to improve early detection and response to large wildfires. A cluster of dozens to hundreds of small low-earth-orbit satellites, working with drones (무인기) and ground stations, can monitor the same area more frequently than a single satellite, enabling faster detection of anomalies. Tests estimate that a 10-satellite lineup at about 500 km altitude could revisit a location on average every 9.75 minutes. Experts say an integrated system—ground sensors, communication-relay satellites, drones for site surveillance, and data planning at ground control—must be designed and operated from the start with full lifecycle scientific analysis to form a robust disaster-prevention network. The approach follows international examples like NASA’s fire detection services and aims to strengthen rapid on-site response and disaster communications to prevent repeats of recent large wildfires in Gyeongbuk.
