In a BBC interview, HYBE’s multinational girl group CâtcâsEye said they have received over 1,000 online death threats since debuting last year, with some threats directed at members’ families. Member Larra, a Tamil Indian–American, described experiencing racist remarks and a false report to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) claiming she was living and working illegally. The members also reported sexist and dehumanizing comments that rank and score them based on looks, singing and dancing; Larra deleted her X (formerly Twitter) account to avoid negative comments. Sofia emphasized that though they chose to be public figures, they remain human and have been deeply affected by the abusive messages. Despite the abuse, the group celebrates its diversity—members come from Switzerland, the Philippines, the U.S. and Korea—and says their multicultural backgrounds are a source of pride and a message to young musicians to embrace their identity. CâtcâsEye was formed by HYBE with Geffen Records (Universal Music) using K-pop training systems and debuted after the audition program The Debut: Dream Academy, achieving international chart success with songs like “Gnarly” and “Gabriela.”
