South Korea’s Rural Development Administration is promoting November 11 as “K Garaetteok Day” to encourage sharing rice-made garaetteok (cylindrical rice cakes) instead of the chocolate stick tradition known as Pepero Day. While many Koreans exchange Pepero (stick-shaped chocolate snacks) on 11/11—similar to Japan’s Pocky & Pretz Day—the Korean government designated the date in 2006 to boost rice consumption and honor farmers; the day is also nationally observed as Agricultural Day. This year the agency ran an online campaign from Nov. 4–11 inviting people to post photos of eating or cooking garaetteok (가래떡) for a chance to win merchandise featuring “Siknyang-i” (the National Institute of Crop Science’s mascot) and rice product sets. The institute hopes the campaign will raise awareness of domestic rice and the value of agriculture.
