A major exhibition, “From the Renaissance to Impressionism: San Diego Museum Special Exhibition,” opened at Seoul’s Sejong Art Center, showcasing 65 selected works from the San Diego Museum of Art’s 35,000-piece collection. Spanning 600 years of Western art—from the Renaissance and Baroque to Rococo, Neoclassicism, Realism, Impressionism and 20th-century modernism—the show features 60 leading artists such as Peter Paul Rubens, Edgar Degas and Amedeo Modigliani. The total value of the loaned works exceeds 2 trillion won. Notably, 28 works are traveling abroad for the first time, including Anthony van Dyck’s portrait of Henrietta Maria and Raoul Dufy’s “Seine in Paris” (파리의 센강). Highlights include Bernardino Luini’s “The Conversion of Mary Magdalene,” El Greco’s “The Penitent Saint Peter,” Francisco de Goya’s “Portrait of Aragon,” and an early Claude Monet haystack that he never exhibited or sold in his lifetime. The exhibition also displays local favorites from San Diego’s collection like Joaquín Sorolla’s “Maria of La Granja,” the museum’s first acquisition. The San Diego Museum plans a major expansion of its exhibition space starting in 2027 to become a more global destination. The Seoul exhibition runs through February 22 next year.
