What Is the Sin of Conscience? A Trial-Play Raises Questions

The Seoul-based theatre group returns with Trap, a black comedy by Friedrich Dürrenmatt, running at Sejong Center S Theater through Nov. 30. The minimalist production stages a mock trial where former judge, prosecutor, defense lawyer and executioner interrogate Traps, a sales head who slowly confesses to an affair and murder. Director Ha uses an intimate three-sided stage so the audience feels like jurors, capturing subtle emotional shifts. Costuming (caw-like details) and live eating/drinking heighten realism. New cast member Park Geon-hyung joins returning actors including Nam Myung-ryeol. The play probes whether “the sin of conscience” — guilt that law can’t punish — is caused by manipulative elders or the accused’s own choices, asking how neglecting moral values can trap people in immorality.
