Backpackers Urge Opening of 'Poodle Island' Access in Woraksan National Park

Backpackers are calling for Woraksan National Park to open the access route to a small nearby islet nicknamed 'Poodle Island' (푸들섬) so it can be used for backpacking. The islet became popular after the recently opened Agyeobong peak (악어봉) offered a view that made the islet look like a poodle standing on its legs. Since Agyeobong opened in September 2024, hikers have flocked to the spot, but the park authority closed the access route in May after too many visitors used a non-designated trail that crosses national park land. Supporters ask Chungju City (충주시) to negotiate with the park to develop the islet as a tourist resource, while conservationists warn the fragile, small islet and nearby Chungju Lake (충주호), a drinking water source, need protection—citing litter, fire traces, and crowding. The issue reflects a tension between outdoor recreation demand and environmental protection.
