The Aesthetics of Simplicity: Byeon Woong-pil’s 'Ordinary Days'

Contemporary Korean painter Byeon Woong-pil (55) presents a solo show 'Ordinary Days' at HoRA Art Space in Samcheong-dong through Dec. 6. His recent works feature pared-down lines and vivid color blocks that depict anonymous faces and objects with minimal detail, inviting viewers to project their own emotions and stories. Byeon—known for earlier distorted self-portraits and the 'Someone' series of featureless faces—has expanded his subjects to include 'Something' and hints at future 'Somewhere' landscapes. He says the exhibition focuses on painting itself—placement of color and form—rather than grand artistic theories, and he aimed to make works people would enjoy living with in their homes.
