Riccardo Muti, born in Naples in 1941, is celebrated as a living legend of Italian opera, especially known for his interpretations of Verdi. Trained at the Milan Verdi Conservatory, Muti gained international recognition after his 1972 recording of Verdi’s Aida with the Philharmonia Orchestra. He later served as music director of La Scala in Milan from 1986, leading the theatre for 19 years though his tenure ended amid controversy over his authoritarian style. In the 1990s he became a prominent conductor with the Vienna Philharmonic (an honorary member) and is regularly invited to their subscription concerts and the Salzburg Festival alongside conductors like Seiji Ozawa, Zubin Mehta, Christian Thielemann, and Franz Welser-Möst.
