As Pepero Day (Nov 11) approaches, shoppers are hesitating to buy Pepero snacks now priced around 2,000 won. First sold in 1983 at 200 won, the original chocolate Pepero has seen gradual price and size changes; today’s 54g pack costs about 10 times its launch price. In the last decade alone, price rose from 1,200 won in 2015 to 2,000 won now, with recent increases blamed partly on reduced cocoa yields from climate change. Many feel pressure to buy multiple packs for coworkers or friends, and some view Pepero Day as a commercial marketing tactic rather than a casual tradition that began among schoolgirls in the 1990s wishing to become “long and slim.” A survey found 54.9% of adults don’t plan to observe the day, citing indifference, resistance to corporate promotions, or unclear reasons to participate. Convenience stores are responding with character-themed gift sets to attract buyers.
