On Oct. 12 in Chuncheon, a daylong community festival at KT&G Sangsangmadang turned into an experiment in blending traditional Korean music with other genres and everyday life. From 2–5 PM, hands-on booths, a flea market, instrument-making for kids, and local food stalls created a playful, welcoming atmosphere. From 5–7 PM, the performance by Keirak Company (also called "Nolja Ensemble") showcased collaborations between traditional musicians, a classical baritone (Jo Yong-won), and street artists, curated by composer-director Choi Ji-hyun. The program emphasized relationship-building over top-down performance: familiar melodies like Arirang were reworked into new rhythms (<Arirang Tango>, <Arirang5>), and participatory pieces (<Seoro>, <Hamkkehamyeon>) fostered a sense of community. By keeping the project rooted in Chuncheon and involving local artists, cooperatives, vendors, and the KT&G Sangsangmadang platform, the event modeled a sustainable local arts ecosystem rather than serving as a pipeline to Seoul. Sponsored by Gangwon Province and the Gangwon Cultural Foundation, the festival demonstrated how regional cultural policy can support artists’ creative work and public value.
