Seoul police carried out concentrated drunk-driving checkpoints on the night of the 7th around high-risk areas including Gangnam Station, Gyodae Station, Yangjae Station, and near Heungin Gate (Heunginmun). Using 116 officers and 35 vehicles, they stopped drivers for about two hours and found 11 cases of driving under the influence: nine led to license suspension and two to license cancellation. One 40-year-old man was caught near Heungin Gate about 150 m from where a Japanese tourist was fatally struck earlier; his blood alcohol concentration was 0.059% and his license was canceled due to a prior DUI. Another driver registered 0.073% after reportedly drinking three soju (Korean distilled liquor) shots. Several drivers measured below the legal limit of 0.03% and were released. Seoul police say surprise checkpoints will continue at accident-prone spots through the year-end.
