A large academic seminar will be held on Nov. 22 at Gwangmudae, organized by the Korea Institute of Traditional Culture, to advocate for UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage listing of Korean traditional dances. The event will reassess the historical, artistic and scholarly value of government-recognized traditional dances and explore listing strategies. Keynote speaker is Heo Kwon (former director-general of the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Intangible Heritage Centre). Presentations cover current UNESCO-listed dances and Korea’s strategy, the scope and meaning of Korea’s traditional dances, regional dance values (including Yeonghonam towel dance), and the artistic and transmission significance of central Gyeonggi/Gangwon and North-of-the-38th-Parallel (Ibugo-do) dance traditions. A wide-ranging panel of scholars and practitioners will discuss preservation, globalization, and transmission. Organizers aim to strengthen the case for UNESCO inscription, tie this work to K-culture/K-dance global interest, and boost pride among younger dancers. (Gwangmudae: a traditional performance venue)
