Chungkang College of Cultural Industries joined the “Beside Pain, Pain Beside” exhibition at Gyeonggi Provincial Office (Nov 4–6) to showcase comics by students from the college’s Manga Content School. The works were produced during a semester-long course “Disasters and Narratives,” part of the RISE (Regional Innovation System & Education) project supported by the Ministry of Education and Gyeonggi Province. Survivors and victims of major social disasters—including the Itaewon crush, Gwangju Hak-dong tragedy, Osong underpass incident, Daegu subway fire, and Sampoong Department Store collapse—served as guest instructors, sharing their experiences while students turned those testimonies into comics. The exhibition, curated by Professor Eom Ki-ho, aims to transform mourning into a form of annotated storytelling and spark social dialogue. Gyeonggi Governor Kim Dong-yeon attended and encouraged student artists. The show will tour other venues (including a Seoul gallery and civic centers) and be available online via the “WooriHamkke” (Our Together) disaster victims’ rights center website. The university says the project demonstrates how art can aid healing, strengthen creative skills, and model community-engaged education through the RISE program.
