Daegu Kansong Museum announced it will remove two celebrated Kansong Foundation ceramics from its permanent exhibition on January 19 for preservation and gallery reconfiguration. The pieces—the Goryeo celadon “cheongja sanggam unhakmun maebyung” (inlaid celadon vase with cloud-and-crane design) and the Joseon white porcelain “baekja cheonghwa cheolchae dongchae chochung nanguangmun byeong” (blue-and-white porcelain with iron- and copper-based polychrome chrysanthemum-orchid-butterfly motifs)—have been centerpieces since the museum opened. The celadon is famed for its flawless form, intricate inlay and rare hue; Kansong founder Jeon Hyeong-pil bought it in 1935 in a well-known acquisition story, and it was designated a national treasure in 1962. The polychrome white porcelain, acquired in 1936 after a fierce auction, displays restrained late-Joseon luxury with embossed floral motifs and bold shape. Both works will be shown together for only about two more months before removal; the revamped permanent exhibition reopens January 27. The museum urges visitors to see these masterpieces before they are temporarily withdrawn.
