“A New Mask Again Today”: The Secret Behind the Musical’s ‘Quick Change’

The hit Korean production of Mrs. Doubtfire showcases an 8-second ‘quick change’ in which actor Daniel becomes Mrs. Doubtfire. The show uses custom silicone masks created from life casting (making a plaster mold of the actor’s face) and silicone molding, with different finishes for photos/TV and for stage use. Stage masks prioritize fast removal and durability: teams added one-touch buckle magnets (원터치 버클) at the sides so actors can detach masks in seconds, reinforced the interior with elastic fabric to prevent tearing, and inserted aluminum plates inside masks to avoid facial distortion under the silicone. The mask-making process took three months and continues to be refined during the run. Mrs. Doubtfire, adapted from the 1994 Robin Williams film, returned to Korean stages with actors like Hwang Jung-min and runs through Dec. 7.
