Jeonnam Province and Gurye County agreed to jointly pursue installation of a cable car on Jirisan (mountain) to boost regional development and tourism. At a policy vision tour held at The-K Jirisan Family Hotel, Gurye County Mayor Kim Sun-ho emphasized Jirisan and the Seomjin River as unique ecological and natural resources and requested support for the cable car project. Proponents argue one cable car each in the Yeongnam and Honam regions should be approved to aid environmental restoration of Jirisan National Park and balanced national development. Governor Kim Young-rok acknowledged interlocal competition has complicated Environment Ministry discussions and said he will seek central government coordination while promoting Gurye as the optimal site. The Jeonnam Research Institute presented a development strategy leveraging Jirisan, the Seomjin River, Hwaeomsa (Buddhist temple), and other cultural and ecological assets, proposing visions such as a Jirisan hot spring renovation, K-temple travel hubs (K-사찰 여행), and a Jirisan premium tourism belt.
